In Georgia, the First State Environmental Authority was established in 1974 as the State Committee for Nature Protection. Its activities were mainly limited to state control and intersegment coordination. In 1991, the Ministry of the Environment was created.

One of the most important tasks of the Ministry is to promote the sustainable development of the country; Organization of an environmental planning system; Development and implementation of public policies, targeted programs, strategies for sustainable development of the environment, national programs, actions and management plans in the field of environmental protection, protection and maintenance of air, water, land and biodiversity, rare and endangered species of flora and fauna , local landscapes and ecosystems characteristic of the country; Implementation of the function of public administration (regulation, licensing, accounting, supervision and control) in the field of waste and chemicals; In accordance with the legislation of Georgia in the field of environmental protection and the fulfillment of international obligations within its competence; Fulfillment of international obligations established by the legislation of Georgia in the field of environmental protection within its competence. The ministry provides society with access to environmental information from a social point of view; Their participation in environmental decision making and the promotion of environmental education and environmental awareness.
