In Georgia, the First State Environmental Authority was established in 1974 as the State Committee for Nature Protection. Its activities were mainly limited to state control and intersegment coordination. In 1991, the Ministry of the Environment was created.

The ministry provides society with access to environmental information from a social point of view; Their participation in environmental decision making and the promotion of environmental education and environmental awareness.
